The focus of the Summer Sculptural Academy is to introduce participants to one of the basic disciplines of figural sculpture, namely clay portraits of a live model. Participants will be familiarised with the basics of plastic anatomy, the principles of measurement, and the application of sculptural procedures, from the application of the basic materials to the final expression and psychology of the portrait. They will then learn to mould the finished work and cast it in plaster.

An integral part of the tuition is a theoretical section charting the history and development of portrait and figural sculpture using a visual presentation with commentary.

Students will become acquainted with the classical sculptures dotted around AVU’s premises in the form of a guided tour.
