Students are expected to work with video, photography and 3D objects, and performance elements often make an appearance. We believe it is very important that all of this takes place in the one studio, which we regard as a laboratory and temporary safe space for experimentation. Tuition takes the form of confrontation and conversation, with critical discourse forming the basis. This requires a specific type of concentration, commitment and intellectual overview. It is clear that the studio attracts many different types of talent, and the ideal student is a chimera. Nevertheless, the clash of intellectual, speculative and intuitive or emotional approaches benefits everyone. Indeed, even a certain kind of misunderstanding or incompatibility can produce good results in the long run. In addition, we avail ourselves of the opportunity to encounter and confront theoreticians, curators and artists who do not work at AVU. Another important activity involves supporting internal and external exhibition or publishing initiatives, which we believe to be an important part of a student’s activities, since direct confrontation with the general public and colleagues inside and outside the school acts as an important source of course correction.

Candidate selection is not based on simply whether they meet a set of criteria specified in advance pertaining to skill and craftsmanship in drawing and painting. The successful applicant will possess a specific type of intensity regardless of medium or anticipated output. Taking into account the proportionality of approaches and characters in the studio, we sometimes give precedence to a certain unpredictably of future development when making our selection. Depending on a student’s character and work to date, we make a recommendation as regards participation in a preparatory course during the first academic year.
