Her work often addresses themes such as absence, displacement and and disappearance while reflecting on the relationship between ephemeral artistic media and entities or spaces inaccessible to observation. Irina Gheorghe also works under the name The Bureau of Melodramatic Research, a project cofounded in 2009 with artist Alina Popa (1982-2019) with the aim of investigating how passions shape contemporary society.Solo exhibitions include Principles of Space Detection at NCAD Gallery Dublin (2023), Things Which Are Not Here, of Which We Cannot Say at Ivan Gallery Bucharest (2022), Methods for the Study of What Is Not There at Künstlerhaus Bremen (2021), Betraying the Senses, or How to Speak of What Is Not There at Project Arts Centre Dublin (2022) and All the Things Which Are Not Here at Swimming Pool Sofia (2019). Recent Bureau of Melodramatic Research solo shows include High Heel Communism at the Kunstverein am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz Berlin (2023), Heartbeat Detection Systems at Suprainfinit Gallery and The Internal Fire at Goethe-Institut (Bucharest, 2022). Solo performances include A Guided Tour through the Distant Future at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin (2024), Scores for the End of the Present at Broadside, Glasgow (2024), Backgarden Trilogy at the Goethe-Institut Dublin (2023), Principles of Space Detection at NCAD Gallery Dublin (2023), Tools for Precision at Zitadelle Spandau Berlin (2021), Preliminary Remarks on the Study of What Is Not There at the Grazer Kunstverein (2021) and Foreign Language for Beginners at the Glasgow International (2018). Her work was part of group exhibitions and projects at Salonul de Proiecte Bucharest, the National Museum of Contemporary Art Bucharest, CCA Derry, TRAFO Budapest, Pratt Manhattan Gallery New York, Times Museum Guangzhou, HOME Manchester, among others.Her research works were part of the art research conferences EARN (That Art Exhibits, the Luca School of Arts, Brussels, 2016; and Hauntopia/What If, the Research Pavilion, Venice, 2017), the Research Pavilion (The Utopia of Access and The Choregraphic, curated by Andrea Phillips and Edgar Schmitz, 2017) or Farewell to Research, curated by Henk Slager, National University of Arts, Bucharest, 2021. Irina has also gained extensive teaching experience at art universities across Europe.Research interests include techniques of estrangement in contemporary art practices, the relationship between art, science and philosophy in engaging with unobservable realities and divergent temporalities in performance and performance notation.Irina Gheorghe studied painting for her BA and was awarded an MA in Photography, Cinematography and Media from the National University of Arts Bucharest in 2010.
