This monograph examines the origins and impact of the theoretical framework that distinguishes between ‘women’s’ and ‘men’s’ art. The central concept is the term ‘feminine painting’, which is understood here as a social construct viewed through the lens of specific (and period-specific) conditions of artistic production. It is the result of doctoral research into inequalities in art education. In addition to the author’s own texts and illustrations, it also provides data from the assessment of final-year projects in the painting studios at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (AVU) between 1994 and 2005. It thus seeks to offer the Academy and the wider cultural public an insight into the recent past through the lens of gender inequalities and to foster an understanding of these mechanisms.
Martina Drozd Smutná is dedicated to painting on both a practical and theoretical level. She regards her painting as a language through which one can speak of intimacy, vulnerability or the everyday nature of personal stories shaped by socio-political phenomena. She is the winner of the 2022 Jindřich Chalupecký Award and exhibits both in the Czech Republic and abroad.
