Visual artist Magdaléna Kašparová works with notes from her adolescence in much the same way as she does with visual collages. Her primary concern is not writing itself, but rather collecting traces of a particular stage of life. Diary entries, notes passed between friends, and text messages retrieved from the memory of an old mobile phone lead us from the shorthand, naivety, and kitsch of adolescence towards lived pain. The central theme is anorexia.
Magdaléna Kašparová (b. 1993) is a multimedia artist and a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. Her work explores personal memory through (compulsively collected) period artefacts, pop-cultural trends, as well as communication channels characteristic of their time (SMS, MMS, Facebook, Snapchat). In doing so, she employs strategies of remediation and media archaeology. In her videos, such as My 00’s Diary (2020) and Storytime (2021), she adopts the conventions of vlogging. Her project Personal Archaeology has been presented both as a site-specific installation and as a website. In her forthcoming book Hlavně se těším na sny (Most of All, I Look Forward to Dreams), she revisits her experience with an eating disorder, for which she was hospitalised at Motol University Hospital, through written records and visual collages.
