Mariella Greil performs and teaches internationally as an artist-researcher focusing on contemporary performance, especially its ramifications into the choreographic and the ethical. Together with Peter Kozek, she is a Senior Artist at the Applied Performance Laboratory at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. She published the monograph Being in Contact – Encountering a Bare Body (2021) and recently the anthology Bare Bodies – Thresholding Life (2023).

Artist talk

Mariella Greil will reflect on her perspective of Embodied Research as cosmopoietic ecology. She will explore the interconnections between choreography and materiality, ethics, and ecology, and offer an overview of her embodied research through the projects Choreo-graphic Figures, Bare Bodies, and Choreo-ethical Assemblages. A particular emphasis will be placed on processes of emergence, relation, and transformation that move beyond the static or the representational and instead linger in the terrain of becoming.

Screening

Shaken Grounds, Shifting Skies is a short film that traverses the volatile terrains of Campi Flegrei, Mount Vesuvius, Vulcano Island in Italy, and the retreating Pasterze Glacier in Austria, interweaving these landscapes with scenes from the art studio and reflective questions. Through this constellation of film fragments, the work meditates on how seismic shifts in the external environment resonate within the human body and psyche. As the narrative unfolds, it shifts its focus to seismic zones, where tectonic instability is no longer purely natural but increasingly shaped by human activity: climate change, groundwater extraction, mining, and waste.
Created by the artist collective Shaken Grounds, the film investigates how art can register and respond to the deep entanglements between humanity and a destabilized Earth.
