The publication Vesmír v hlavě presents a picture of the artistic work of Slovak sculptor Pavla Sceranková in the last decade. Through texts by British critic Chloe Stead and Czech curator Jan Zálešák, it is divided into thematic chapters that provide insight into the artist’s rich sculptural and visual language.

Pavla Sceranková (*1980) brings a new authorial language and expression to the field of sculpture and object making; a new conception building on the strong legacy of postmodern but also neo-conceptual spatial art. She creates sculptural objects and installations characterized by minimalist purity and a sensitive relationship to a given place. Another aspect of her work is the creation of objects that incorporate an element of action, inviting the viewer to interact. Sometimes they take the form of video, or rather video sculpture, which stands between performance, animated sculpture, and autonomous video. They express the existential relationship of a person to the environment in which they live and with which they are confronted.

In terms of content, Pavla Sceranková is intensively concerned with the reflection of human perception, memory and individual experience of the surrounding world. She draws on personal experience and examines the way this experience is preserved in memory, or what form it takes. The author thematizes the phenomenon of perception, the experience of the act of perception, the relation of perception to the perceived world, and the consciousness of the act of perception.

She studied from 2000 to 2006 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, where she earned her doctorate in 2011. As part of a scholarship, she completed a one-year internship with Prof. Tony Gragg in Berlin. From 2010 to 2015, she worked as an academic at the Department of Art Education and Textile Design at the University of Hradec Králové. She currently runs her own Studio of Intermedia Art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague with Dušan Zahoranský.Graphic Design: Adéla Svobodová.
