This dissertation examines new forms of community housing. In connection with lifestyle
changes, there is growing interest in alternatives to mainstream housing. Globally and locally,
we feel the impacts of numerous changes and challenges, such as housing crises, climate
change, migration, an aging population, the decline of the traditional family, the loss of social
ties, and the risk of loneliness. In this context, the percentage of residents who voluntarily
choose community forms of housing and the development of social bonds as a response to the
current neoliberal order is increasing.

Growing interest in this type of housing can also be observed in the Czech Republic, although it
still encounters deeply rooted ideals of private ownership and negative connotations with the
previous regime. This dissertation aims to identify archetypes of community housing
architecture in Czech and international contexts using analogical, comparative, observational,
and narrative methods. The research methodology is based on qualitative research, focusing on
selected case studies. The selection of case studies is derived from a fundamental research
question: How does architecture shape the community, and how does the community shape
architecture within the framework of community housing? This phenomenon is viewed through
three selected thematic perspectives: community housing architecture as a tool for
emancipation, community housing architecture as a form of protest, and community housing architecture as a longing for togetherness in an individualized society. During this process, these
perspectives will be questioned, elaborated, and completed. Based on the established
framework, case studies will be evaluated according to the criteria of alternative (use, function,
program), microworld (relationship to the city), and community architecture (spatial elements).
