The doctoral research project entitled Normalization-Era Sculpture in Czechoslovakia focuses more closely on developments at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, which, as the country’s most prestigious art school, was expected to produce so-called official artists willing and able to create in the spirit of socialist art. During the period under examination, this process within the Academy was overseen by the teachers Miloš Axman, Jiří Bradáček, Jan Hána, Karel Kolumek, Jiří Kryštůfek, Karel Lidický, Antonín Nykl, and Vlastimil Večeřa.

The research aims to focus more closely on these specific figures of power, on their pedagogical activities, but above all on their broader functioning within the artistic establishment. Owing to their positions within Party and union cultural structures, all of the aforementioned individuals occupied privileged positions within the art world. Through this research, the dissertation seeks to revise the existing approach to the stigmatized visual art production of the Normalization period, which, partly due to the absence of sustained scholarly interest, has remained largely unchanged since the 1990s.
