The project aims to explore the limits of the more-than-human sensibility that contemporary art proclaims. Its basic hypothesis assumes that the perception and interpretation of the works affected by this emerging discernment are limited by a number of external factors stemming from the (dis)positions of the interpreting subjects as well as the situatedness of the installations themselves.

The format of gallery speculation on different types of neglected entities is thus paradoxically unable to grant status to all the actors involved. Compared to the emancipatory claims made, there always remains something hidden or reduced. In order to define the limits of this sensibility, the meaning-making principles through which works that thematise interspecies belonging are interpreted will be examined. In doing so, special emphasis will be placed on the mechanisms by which status is granted to those who are literally “invisible” in the exhibition space.

Another important hypothesis is then based on the assumption that this higher distinctiveness may cause a transformation of the ontological nature of the artwork itself, or rather the set of social assumptions that the audience takes into account when appreciating it. Using different types of models of contemporary art making, this research project will attempt to determine whether and how this occurs and to demonstrate what this may mean for disciplines concerned with the interpretation of art.
