Linda Wrong’s doctoral research examines contemporary approaches to material in visual art, particularly within sculpture, from a perspective that connects ecological awareness, bodily perception, and the cultural meanings of materials. The research focuses on their interrelations and explores how material can become an active carrier of meaning, memory, and relationship, rather than merely a medium of form. Through original concepts such as “haptic fetishism” and the “relief message,” the project connects theoretical discourse with artistic practice. The research primarily works with non-elite and recycled materials that carry the imprint of consumption, waste, and the environmental burden of the contemporary world, while simultaneously representing some of the most exposed materials of the current ecological crisis. The concept of the “relief message” understands sculptural gesture as a record, pressure, and imprint of reality into matter. This principle is further developed through the concept of the “verbal relief,” in which language becomes a structure that can be read similarly to material itself — through layers, rhythm, and bodily contact. The project combines experimental artistic practice with theoretical reflection drawing from contemporary philosophy, aesthetics, and environmental thought. The resulting body of work moves between relief, sculptural object, and text, creating a space in which touch, language, and material merge into a unified plastic statement.
