Is it possible to use a single medium, a printed publication consisting of texts and image reproductions, to convey artistic work created in completely different media? How can a catalogue capture the work of Tomáš Svoboda, who in recent years has focused almost exclusively on the art of the moving image? If it is customary in the world of film to make a documentary film about a film, is it appropriate to create a book about a catalogue as an analogous procedure? The inventory of his artistic work from 2008 to 2024, which straddles the boundary between visual art and film, is prefaced by Pier Paolo Pasolini’s essay “The Screenplay as a Structure that Wants to Be Another Structure.”

Tomáš Svoboda has long been interested in moving images and their socio-cultural connections in his free work. In addition to his own artistic practice, he also works as an exhibition architect, film set designer, and head teacher of the New Media 1 studio at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. He is one of the founders of the Display gallery in Prague.
