Thoughts on DJing In the scenery of contemporary arts, DJing is an artform situated at the boundaries of visual, musical and performative arts. This synaesthetic character, along with the emerging technologies used in today’s DJ performances, raise a lot of debates concerning the ways in which artistic research in this field should be conducted and conceived.On the one hand, although there are quite a few studies in the particular fields of visual, musical and theatrical arts, these studies don’t usually take into account the multi-disciplinary character of contemporary performative arts and tend to oversimplify the process of research. On the other hand, the close relation between DJing and technology demands a new approach to the field of aesthetics in general, that takes into account the way in which technology and informatics became, in the past decades, an essential part of human existence and a definitory trait of human consciousness. It can be argued that this state of affairs led to a “scientific turn” in contemporary aesthetics, whose effects are also relevant to the field of artistic research.Taking these into consideration, in order to account for the contemporary practices in DJing, the question about the nature and tools of artistic research should be asked again in a radical way, such that the process of art creation can be understood in terms of a syntax finding effort that uses previous artworks as basic material.
