AVU places an emphasis on practical teaching – in addition to the studios, teaching also takes place in workshops and laboratories, where students develop their technical and craft skills. Below is an overview of the facilities that provide this teaching. These include Digilab, the Printmaking and Craft Workshops, the 3D Centre, the Photography Studio, and the painting, sculpture and drawing preparation classes.
Digilab
The digital laboratory is an educational and technological workplace for information and audiovisual technology. Since it was opened in 2001 it has been offering students and employees consultation and support.
Printmaking Workshops
The Printmaking Workshops in the Modern Gallery provide facilities for students to learn the technology and techniques of printmaking and realise their own projects. The workshop is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for relief printing, intaglio printing, screen printing, and lithography.
Craft Workshops
This group includes a woodwork, metalwork and plasterwork workshop, a plastics and composites workshop, and a stone-carving workshop. A ceramics workshop will also be added soon. In addition to the craft workshops staffed by skilled professionals, there is also a shared workshop where you can book your own space for work, as well as a hire service for tools and equipment that you can then use.
3D Centre
The centre offers a complete range of 3D technologies such as object scanning, virtual modelling, advanced 3D printing, and soft material CNC cutting.
Photo Studio
The workshop includes a darkroom where it is possible to work using traditional analogue techniques, and courses focusing on classic black-and-white photography are held here.
Technical Support Specialist
Technical Support Specialist helps students realise artworks that require technical documentation and a materials budget.
Practical Skills: Painting, Drawing and Sculpture
These are not typical workshops, but rather an introduction for anyone who wishes to familiarise themselves with the basic techniques of painting, drawing, and modelling from a live model and a cast. Each of these modules runs at the same time as the classes held as part of the Preparatory Studio programme and is open to all students, subject to agreement with their supervising lecturers and depending on the availability of individual courses.
