Václav Magid is an artist and aesthetician. After unfinished studies at the Academy of Fine Arts and UMPRUM, he received a Master's degree in Philosophy at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague, where he continues his doctoral studies in aesthetics. His work explores the aesthetic manifestations of the relationship between everyday life and ideology (e.g. the solo exhibition Autonomy, PLATO, 2015). He has exhibited in group shows in the Czech Republic and abroad (Lyon Biennial, 2013), and has twice been a finalist for the Jindřich Chalupecký Award (2010, 2013). In addition to reviews and shorter texts on contemporary art, he has published scholarly studies on Romanticism, the avant-garde, conceptualism and political engagement in art. As a curator, he has prepared a number of group exhibitions (Material States, Karlín Studios, 2006; Punctum, Futura, 2008); his most recent curatorial and theoretical project was a series of seven exhibitions and publications, Conditions of Impossibility (Kurzor Gallery, 2017–2018). From 2006–2018, he worked at the AVU’s research department, where he directed (together with Jakub Stejskal) the professional journal A Notebook for Art, Theory and Related Zones, and also edited original and translated publications in theory (Peter Bürger, Boris Groys, Jan Zálešák, Slavoj Žižek). His literary debut, The Little Encyclopedia of Improprieties, was published by ArtMap in 2019. Currently, he lectures on theory and history of art at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Brno University of Technology and the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague.
