AVU offers four doctoral study programmes: Fine Arts, Theory and History of Contemporary Art, Artworks Restoration, and Architectural Practice. The doctoral studies are currently conducted in Czech.
General Information
In addition to individual research and courses, doctoral studies involve active participation in both the local and international academic community, involvement in a studio or research department, and various activities organized by the Department of Doctoral Research. Throughout their studies, doctoral candidates are supported by their respective studios and the Doctoral Department, as well as by the Academy’s wider technological and research infrastructure. Beyond the standard doctoral stipend, students may apply for specific grant support for creative and research projects related to their dissertation.
Dissertation Projects
During their studies, doctoral students are guided by supervisors who adhere to the AVU Standard for Doctoral Supervisors. Doctoral research is developed within the Academy’s interdisciplinary environment, in dialogue with other disciplines, departments, and institutions both in the Czech Republic and abroad. Dissertations may focus on artistic research outcomes, historical-theoretical inquiry, or the development of technologically innovative methods and solutions. In artistic programs, the study aims toward the realization of complex artistic research projects that critically examine cultural, social, or societal phenomena through visual arts and architecture. Theoretical projects primarily explore issues related to contemporary art. Doctoral research in restoration is typically oriented toward technological and analytical aspects of the discipline.
Standard Duration of Study
The standard duration of full-time doctoral study is four years. The study is carried out according to an individual study plan under the guidance of an advisor. The current progress of each dissertation project is presented annually to both academic and general audiences during the doctoral colloquium. The quality and structure of the study are overseen by the Subject Area Board for the programmes in Fine Arts, Artworks Restoration, and Architectural Practice, and by the Subject Area Board for the Theory and History of Contemporary Art programme. Upon successful defense of the dissertation, the graduate is awarded the Ph.D. degree.
