Tomáš Vaněk (*1966) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in 1990–97. He has been exhibiting independently since 1997. During his studies he founded the art group BJ (Bezhlavý jezdec/Headless Horseman) together with Josef Bolf, Ján Mančuška and Jan Šerých. Since 1998 he has used the name Particip for his works. It denotes actions and things conceived for a certain place and situation. In 2000, together with Vít Havránek and Jiří Skála, he founded Production of Activities of the Present – PAS, which, among other things, prepared and realised, in cooperation with the Projektil architectural studio and the National Library, Dan Perjovschi’s central artwork for the NTK in Prague 6. In his artistic work he often creates inconspicuous situations in public and gallery space, working with the phenomenon of templating in both semantic and media sense.

Since 2010, he has been leading the Intermedia 3 studio at AVU. In his studio teaching, he promotes the importance of conceptual explorations of individual working practices and their understanding in order to find individual and collective artistic positions for creating artistic objects and gestures. He was awarded the academic rank of Associate Professor in 2017 and the academic title of Professor in 2021. From 2014 to 2022, he served as Rector of the Academy of Fine Arts. At the AVU he holds the position of a guarantor of the Doctoral Programme in Free Art.
