We are interested in the concept of work. When, in what way and how much we need to work in order to leave our own intuitive settings and move closer to the meanings and things that attract us. We do not work for results, but for ourselves and others, with ourselves and others, to find out more than we know. We are interested in the social nature of working relationships and the processes involved in creating things.
For anyone who wants to study in the Intermedia 3 studio bachelor’s programme
Applicants who apply to study in the bachelor’s programme at the Intermedia 3 studio should have a certain amount of original work in any medium. They should be interested in what the medium means in the context of artistic work. They should be actively interested in the world of fine arts, music, theater, literature, or other humanities or technical fields. Anyone who wants to study at the Intermedia 3 studio should get to know the studio’s activities so that they have a basic idea of where and why they want to study. We evaluate submitted work primarily with regard to the reasons and methods behind its creation. Through the submitted documentation, we assess the applicant’s interest, openness, and aptitude for entering the field of intermedia art. Last but not least, we are interested in the applicant’s social awareness of the things happening in the world around us.
We do not assign tasks in the studio. At the beginning of each semester, students prepare individual work plans. They formulate in writing or visually what they want to focus on during the semester, how they will work, and what they will work on. We devote the necessary attention to these plans during individual and collective discussions. Students work on their projects in the studio environment alongside others. In collaboration with studio teachers and invited guests, they learn about the intermedia relationships that exist within painting, drawing, sculpture, film, text, virtual reality, and performance while working on their own topics. In studio work at the bachelor’s level, we pay close attention to the concepts of searching, finding, and recording. We associate searching with curiosity, finding with perception, and recording with the ability to do things believably.
Once a week (or more often, if necessary), we meet in the studio for consultations, presentations, discussions, and cooking together. We invite external guests to discuss selected topics. Once a year, we organize a joint working stay within the Czech Republic and a joint studio trip to foreign exhibitions and events. Every year, we organize a studio exhibition so that students can gain experience in preparing and installing in a new space. As part of their self-development, we recommend that students take advantage of internships in other studios at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, at other art colleges and art faculties in the Czech Republic, or at selected schools abroad.
For anyone who wants to study in the Intermedia 3 studio master’s programme
Applicants who apply to study in the follow-up master’s programme in the Intermedia 3 studio should have a convincing amount of original work in any medium. They should enter the program with a clear idea of what they will be working on for three years. We give preference to specific projects or ideas that build on previous work and studies. They should have advanced knowledge of what the medium means in the context of artistic work. They should have a professional interest in the world of fine arts, music, theater, literature, or other humanities or technical fields. For anyone who wants to study in the Intermedia 3 studio doctoral programme
In the doctoral program, we are looking for distinctive artistic projects related to social issues. We expect doctoral students to have the ability to think analytically and take a poetic approach to creating original methodologies with outputs in textual, visual, or audiovisual form. Doctoral students bring additional pedagogical and artistic quality to the studio environment – they participate in teaching and the running of the studio, and take part in colloquia, conferences, workshops, and seminars, not only within the school.
We welcome individual consultations with all applicants at our studio. If you are interested, please contact us at jiri.havlicek@avu.cz.
