What subjective and universal human values can art illuminate?
For whom and why am I creating art?
How does one live and work meaningfully in a world facing climate crisis?
Which attitudes and habits are reasonable to maintain, which should be abandoned, and which need to be discovered?

Intermediality

is the freedom to choose a medium appropriate to expression. The contexts, place or associations to which the artistic gesture is directed can themselves point to appropriately creative or non-creative means. This is why at Intermedia Studio II we take into account the full range of possible materials and media that will help artists give voice to their vision. Working intermedially means perceiving the qualities offered by the combination of traditional and new techniques. We work with the demands this freedom places on the artist. Students try out various different crafts and creative procedures. They learn which processes they should try out and which are better left to experts. The students themselves create the studio profile.Intermedia Studio 2 offers a space for coordinated and spontaneous discussions. Suggestions for topics to be discussed are raised by students, lecturers and guests. We then investigate the outcomes of these discussions by means of monotonous handicraft, spontaneous gratuitous gestures, and by reading, listening and keeping our counsel.

Work in space is emphasised at the studio. We advise each other as regards working with wood, metal, materials for casting, and we familiarise ourselves with digital image and sound. We have experience with working in public space, both interiors and exteriors, on permanent and temporary interventions, and in physical and virtual space.

We emphasise a slower, mindful selection of artistic resources that take into account the scale and context of the place in which the artwork is to be placed. Rather than offering a training in techniques and crafts, we want to work with our students to find a meaningful goal for which to use these techniques. We are aware that the most spontaneous gesture is a hidden or direct commentary on the state of the world.

Every student has their own plan. They cooperate with external consultants they themselves select or we recommend. The studio possesses sound technological facilities with physical and digital work tools that are at the students’ complete disposal. During their studies, students will naturally find their place on the Czech and foreign art scenes. We teach them how to present themselves and to communicate with galleries, and we support them in grant-related, commercial and non-profit activities. We ensure they are able to speak about their work in foreign languages.

In certain respects the doctoral programme overlaps with the predominant discussions taking place in the studio. What active role in public space can artists occupy? What are the strategies of political and civic activity, protest and intervention? We are interested in dissertation topics that relate to methods by which we might protect, cultivate and transform the public space, and which examine the commercialisation of public zones, social marginalisation, and space for nonsense, poetry, joke and play.

We do not flinch from examining the very core of a problem.

We do not take ourselves completely seriously.

We refine our perception.

We focus our movements.

We do not waste the forces of nature, other people, and, if possible, our own.

We are open about what we know and do not know.

Art is a value that emerges from within us but is only materialised between us.
