Art for us is a way of thinking. It creates a space of intelligibility on intuitive and rational levels. We perceive the artwork as being coterminous with artistic thinking.

In both cases the boundary of understanding should be based on discovery and experimentation, rather than on the presentation of time-tested constructs and calculated principles. Intellectual talent is as valuable for work in the Intermedia Studio I as pure visuals that may not even be fully understood. A wide range of interpretations, immediacies, sensitivities, rare touches, as well as risks leading to failure form an open territory to be mapped out independently of established traditions and interpretations. This offers a space for the search for understanding, time for experimentation, and the active experience of the free territory of art.The six-year course offers sufficient space both to student and lecturer for the sensitive analysis of difference, as well as representing a point of mutual communication. Every year new students arrive at the studio and graduates leave. The lecturer should always be the one who does not restrict or dictate or manipulate, but perceives each individual and works with the potential growth of each student.

When teaching we emphasise open communication that stimulates a definition of questions and a subsequent verification of responses in time and space. The ideal platform for cooperation between students and lecturers is mutual trust and the establishment of active participation in studio outcomes both inside and outside AVU. We regard tuition to be a joint and individual space for the confrontation of opinions and possibilities regarding how most precisely to formulate and realise ideas within a multifunctional context. The discipline of intermedia opens up a wide spectrum of study, not only in areas affiliated with the visual arts, but also in related spheres such as physics, chemistry, philosophy psychology, sociology, etc.

The programme of accompanying lectures given by guests from the sphere of fine art and beyond helps meet the demand for this conception of education. Group and individual consultations and confrontational meetings in the studio should encourage students to play an active role and to increase their interest in everything that relates to visual and non-visual art. During consultations on and the proofreading of student texts, great emphasis is laid upon verbal expression in both spoken and written form.

should be creative, motivated, completely independent and responsible visual artists who are able to work on both solo and group projects. After six years of study they acquire a sensitivity for the selection of materials, learn to use and combine a multiplicity of media, and when creating a work to deal with both concept and production / installation within the given context and environment, be this a gallery or non-gallery space.

The doctoral course is for advanced students who have a vision and are able to expand their artistic work on the basis of research. The three-year programme offers lecture cycles, consultations with their supervisor and active inclusion in the operation of the studio and its programme within and without AVU. The lecturer has great expectations of a student of the doctoral programme and is a supervisor who confronts, motivates and challenges dogmatic claims and definitions. Doctoral students should in turn provide inspiration for undergraduate students and be a role model in terms of their approach to study. Their dissertation should not only stand its ground in the final examination, but above all should have an irreplaceable role in the development of art in the future for coming generations.
