We see Sculpture Studio 2 to be a living organism. Every year, 2-3 new students arrive and it is impossible to gauge which direction their personality and talent will take.

We do not take a dogmatic approach to teaching. Tuition evolves in the same way our personal approaches to art, often in connection with the focus and development of student interests at any one time.

The studio’s long-term plan is to cultivate not only the formal skills and craftsmanship of students, but also their intellectual abilities. This does not involve searching intuitively for “ideal forms”. Instead, forms should be viewed as the outcome of an intellectual environment created in the studio. We consider searching for ways of thinking and speaking about art to be of supreme importance. Visual thinking and practical work with materials are not antitheses, but form a complementary whole, and it thus makes sense to study both in parallel.

In the studio, we maintain the widest possible range of conceptual and formal approaches to art. We strive to create an environment that is welcoming, yet at the same time provokes us in some way. Work and teaching in the studio take place on an individual basis. We also explore shared themes, which usually lead to studio exhibitions.

In terms of layout and equipment, the studio is primarily designed for three-dimensional work with materials (sculptures, objects, installations); however, work that extends into other media (drawing, painting, photography, video, performance, sound, digital technology, etc.) is also welcome. It is not essential whether the result of the work is a realistic or abstract sculpture, a video-based installation or a conceptual project; what is important is to consider why the chosen means were selected.

The focus of study in our studio is distinctly multidisciplinary. Collaboration with the AVU Architecture Studio, as well as with PhD students and external experts from both artistic and non-artistic fields, has proved highly successful. We are very happy to provide PhD students, as part of their teaching placements, with the opportunity to collaborate on their projects with students from our studio. Students from abroad are also welcome in the studio.

Studio meetings and consultations take place in Czech and English.
