Sculpture 1 is a space for hands-on artistic practice. In the studio, the key element is active looking – perceiving qualities such as mass, color, proportion, and their bodily resonance. Students focus on their own independent artistic practice, complemented by a studio program that includes site visits and experimentation with material combinations.

Form of Instruction

The studio’s indoor and outdoor spaces are designed for working with three-dimensional media, ranging from assemblage to architecture. We keep the capacity at around 16 students. In the studio, we speak Czech, Slovak, and English. Teaching takes place across year groups, allowing students to influence and learn from one another. Artistic interests are discussed during individual consultations, where we reflect on each student’s creative activity and consider the material outcomes of different stages of the creative process.

Consultations

We aim to understand each student’s creative process through dialogue about physical works in progress or completed pieces, while also exploring the limits of translation between visual and verbal language.

Craft Facilities

Students develop their craft skills in school workshops and laboratories, which offer, for example, stucco, stonework, metalworking, woodworking, and other specialized activities.

Teaching Methodology

In the bachelor's program, we develop students' ability to give meaning to their intuition and creative needs. When it is necessary to encourage the creative process, we use supportive constraints rather than specific assignments. Master's students experience a more open-ended approach with a clear focus, while consultations offer potential trajectories they may pursue.

Final Presentation

The semester concludes with a public presentation of the ongoing creative process and a critical discussion with an expert panel.

Graduate Profile

The studio prepares students for professional artistic practice and academic work.

I attempt to express myself through form (shapes, colors, materials…), and before applying, I have familiarized myself thoroughly with basic sculptural media and processes. I have time to participate in studio sessions throughout the semester and a strong interest in both receiving and providing feedback.

I think independently and draw from my own creative resources. I have an awareness of the functions of art and exhibition practices, and I seek ways to talk about the artistic event and sensitively interpret its outcomes.
