The Research Support Department serves as the coordinating centre for research activities across the institution. It focuses on developing AVU’s research portfolio in the fields of art history and theory, restoration, and artistic research.

The Department provides infrastructure, coordination and resources for research activities that connect artistic practice, theory, applied disciplines and interdisciplinary collaboration. It manages research data and supports the work of the Research Board. It contributes to establishing artistic research within the national system for evaluating research, development and innovation (R&D&I), and strengthens AVU’s standing in the international research community.

VVP AVU Research Centre – conducts basic research on Czech visual art from 1945 to the present, set against key historical events and approached through exhibition histories.

LARGE – supports artistic research across the Academy and interdisciplinary projects with international reach.

Restoration studios: Restoration of Painting and Polychrome Sculpture, and Restoration of Sculpture - devoted primarily to applied research and materials analysis in the conservation of paintings, polychrome sculpture and sculpture.

Doctoral Research Department – provides specialised support to doctoral candidates.

Research Groups – creating an environment for shared artistic and theoretical inquiry across a range of thematic areas.

Department of Art Theory and History – conducts research in art theory, criticism, aesthetics and related fields.

AVU takes an active part in key international research networks and platforms:

AVU Publishing House — publishes research findings, scholarly studies and monographs by members of the AVU academic community.

Notebook for Art, Theory and Related Zones — a peer-reviewed scholarly journal published by the VVP AVU Research Centre.

VELKÉ – Journal of Artistic Investigation — a journal for artistic research.

An annual performative conference on artistic research, organised by LARGE.

Doctoral colloquium — a regular public event at which doctoral research is shared with Czech and international audiences.

Research groups symposium — a regular thematic public event organised by the Department of Doctoral Research.

Participation in scholarly conferences.

Digitisation of final theses.

The Department is responsible for collecting and processing data for the national registers of creative outputs (RUV) and of research, development and innovation (R&D&I):

RUV (Registry of Artistic Outputs): monitoring and reporting of creative and artistic activity — exhibitions of visual art, performances, restoration and architectural projects, and more.

RIV (Register of Information on Results): collecting and submitting publication and non-publication R&D&I outputs produced by members of the AVU academic community.

SKV (System of Quality Results): submitting selected outputs for assessment in Module M1 by remote peer review, in accordance with the Methodology for the Evaluation of Research Organisations currently in force.

The Department also coordinated AVU’s preparation for assessment by the International Evaluation Panel (MEP 2025) and provides methodological guidance to research units on documentation requirements, quality standards and the strategic development of research portfolios.
